Devanagari is a syllabic script. It groups sound into aksharas — a consonant, or a joined conjunct like क्ष, त्र or श्र, together with its vowel. So “Shreya” isn’t five letters; it’s two syllables: श्रे + या.
Vowels after a consonant become little signs called matras. One of them, the i-matra, is even drawn before its consonant although it’s spoken after — which is exactly where a naive, letter-by-letter tool falls apart. And sounds like the ज़ in “Zara” or the nasal अं in “Anshu” need their own marks. This tool keeps all of that intact.
